The funky, whimsically irreverent Japanese expats Miho Hatori (vocals, drum pad) and Yuka Honda (keyboard, sampler) return to Japan Society’s stage, for the first time as Cibo Matto! Since officially reuniting this year, these downtown darlings are back with their charming lyrics and dizzying array of sounds. This evening also features the international debut of the silky-voiced keyboardist/singer-songwriter Yu Sakai, straight from Tokyo. With R&B beats and jazz-fused J-pop melodies, Sakai’s music is an inventive blend of self-mixed instrumentation and multi-layered vocals. Downtown New York collides with modish Shibuya in this one-night-only J-music mash-up!

NYCC Kick Off Concert with DJ Z-Trip and Tom Morello

There is no F.E.T.E.S. this year but there is still a party going down at the New York Comic Con. 2011 promises to be the biggest NY Comic Con/ Anime Fest thus far, and to make sure everything gets off on the good foot, NYCC is holding a Kick-Off Concert featuring DJ Z-Trip and Tom Morello (guitarist, Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave). The concert will be held at the IGN Theatre (in the Jacob Javits Center) at 7:30PM (Thursday Oct 13th). The concert is free to all VIP’s and 4-Day ticket holders BUT seating is first come, first served and will be extremely limited due to size of the auditorium and popularity of the event.

Turn Around Techno-Pop

TheHikashu + Tomoe Shinohara concert is going to be so smashing, Japan Society will turn around it’s 262 capacity auditorium for a one night only all you can dance through down. The standing only fun will begin sharply at 7:30pm this Friday (13th). On top of that 50% of all ticket sales will go towards the society’s Earthquake Releif Fund.

12-Hour Special Concert and Open House

On Saturday April 9th the Japan Society will open it’s doors for a 12-Hour Concert and Open House benefiting organizations that directly help people affected by the earthquake and tsunamis that struck Japan. As a volunteer organizer, we hope you can join us for a day packed to the max with entertainment. The $5.00 entrance fee will provide you with access to multiple open concerts, spanning traditional, classical, jazz and pop/indie rock. Additionally, you’ll get access to special activities including origami and language workshops, language classes, storytelling and more.

Me & Mars are all set to deliver two exciting live performances at the Philadelphia Museum of Art this Friday . Tomorrow’s Art After 5 session will be Japanese themed, and the trio well augment their live performance with the addition of keyboard player, dancers and visuals. Performing songs from the recently released An Eruptive Spaceship album as well as cover a few popular Japanese songs, Me & Mars intends to entertain earthlings and aliens alike!

Run, Don’t Walk: Japan Society’s latest Retrospective promises big fun

“Salaryman” a word usually associated with what’s not Cool Japan. However, Japan Society’s new film retrospective might just provide provide an alternative view of Japan’s corporate livestock. Titled: Run, Salaryman, Run! A Retrospective of SABU’s Film Works, this film program takes a deep look at the ‘punk’n'roll’ comedies of director/actor Hiroyuki Tanaka aka Sabu. 6 of his feature films will be shown, as well as a Q&A session with Sabu in the flesh.

Run, Salaryman, Run! A Retrospective of Sabu’s Film Works

New York, NY – Born Hiroyuki Tanaka (1964), Sabu is the cult auteur of “punk n’ roll,” alternative comedies, often imitated, never equaled, and far too rarely shown in the U.S. since his 1996 feature debut, Non-Stop a.k.a DANGAN Runner .

Japan Society’s Film Program now breaks the barrier with America’s first major retrospective Run, Salaryman, Run! A Retrospective of SABU’s Film Works, featuring 6 of Sabu’s 11 feature films, (a twelfth is due in 2011) from January 26 through February 5.

In addition to Non-Stop a.k.a DANGAN Runner, Run, Salaryman, Run! includes Monday, Postman Blues, Postman Blues, Drive, The Blessing Bell, and the big screen International Premiere of Troubleman. Sabu makes live appearances to introduce Monday, Postman Blues, and Non-Stop, and take part in a Q&A following each of the three films.

Smart, fun and explosive, Sabu delivers the high speed, high style, hard luck, and quirky lusts and lunacies of post-Bubble Japan. In a world of hazards and happenstance, he zeroes in on blue and white collar everymen tossed into dangerously absurd situations from which they desperately try to run. Speeding along at breakneck pace, Sabu brings a fresh and frantic twist to traditional film genres (the yakuza film, the thriller, etc.), juicing their lean, clean-cropped premises with electroshock cinematic style and über edgy music scores.

“Sabu has drawn comparisons with Buster Keaton, Johnnie To and Doug Liman,” says Samuel Jamier, director of Japan Society’s Film Program. “His debut was definitely a precursor to Run Lola Run, and his innovative use of music could easily be described as Tarantino-esque. But his satirical jamborees, more than just friendly black comedies, are unlike anything else on the silver screen: they are stamina tests, survival riffs, and victory rolls. His work is the embodiment of the waning days of ‘Cool Japan’, and an important marker of the vibrancy and vitality of contemporary Japanese cinema.”
